Ichitarou has spent most of his life in one room. He is the heir to a big apothecary shop in Edo, but his body is weak, and the whispers about him are worse than any fever. So his grandfather prays for help, and two spirits answer: Sasuke and Nikichi, bound to guard the boy for the rest of his life. Then the boy starts slipping out. One evening he stays too long, and on the dark road home a man covered in blood comes running at him. Ichitarou gets away. He also sees the body. The next day the story going around town does not match what he saw, and that difference sticks in his head. The killer is still out there, and the deaths keep piling up. Ichitarou is no great detective, but he is sharp, and he has time on his hands. He asks questions of people and of spirits, and sometimes they answer. Can a kid who was never allowed past the front gate really catch a murderer before the murderer finds him?
