In Alcia, everything about you is a number burned into your skin. How far you have walked, how many compliments you have earned, anything at all. The number rises and falls, and if it ever hits zero, the ground opens and swallows you whole. That is how Hina lost her mother, who was already half gone when she made the girl promise to find the Red Baron, a hero out of legend. Hina grew up in the mountains with only that promise, and now she wanders, chasing a name she barely understands. Then she runs into Licht Bach. A masked stranger, a tavern, a drink, a good evening. And a soldier picking a fight she cannot win. Licht steps in and saves her, which makes no sense at all, because his number is negative. Nobody with a negative count should be able to do what he just did. So who is he really, this man with a count that should not exist? Why does he wear the mask, and why does a second number sit hidden beneath the first one, white star and all? Hina came looking for a legend. What if the legend is standing right in front of her, and he is nothing like the stories say?
