Judy Abbott grows up in the John Grier orphanage with no parents and not much of a future. Then an essay she wrote lands in the hands of a wealthy man named John Smith, and just like that her life flips. He pays for her to attend a fancy school, no strings attached, except one: she has to write him a letter every single month. No replies, ever. She catches only a glimpse of him before he disappears, a tall shadow with long legs, so she starts calling him Daddy Long Legs and addressing her letters to that name.
