The coalition war is over and all of China is counting its wounds. Qin, the state that came out on top, should be breathing easy. It isn't. In the palace, Ying Zheng and Buwei Lü keep circling each other, and Lü has already picked his date: eighteen months from now, he'll ruin Zheng's coming-of-age ceremony. Then word arrives that twenty thousand Zhao soldiers are marching on Qin. The court has no general worth sending, and Lü, smiling, suggests Zheng ride out himself. Instead, Zheng's half-brother Cheng Jiao volunteers. The two men learned to trust each other in the last war, so Zheng hands him the army. Half a day. That's how long the fighting lasts before the Zhao forces simply pull back. Nobody retreats that fast without a reason, and whatever is moving behind the scenes, it's aimed at Qin's throne. Zheng is left with two names he can count on: Bi, who commands thirty thousand men, and Xin, who leads the Fei Xin force. Two men against a court full of knives. Can they hold the line long enough for Zheng to reach his own coronation alive?
