Makio Koudai is thirty five, a novelist, and perfectly happy with her small circle of friends and her own company. When she gets the call about the car crash that killed her older sister Minori and Minori's husband, she feels almost nothing. Years of childhood criticism from Minori had turned the sisters into strangers. Then at the morgue she comes face to face with Asa, her fifteen year old niece, a girl she hasn't seen in years. Asa is barely holding it together, and Makio, unsure what else to do, tells her to start keeping a diary. Relatives pass on taking the girl in. So Makio, who has never raised anyone, says she will do it herself. Now two people who never chose each other share a apartment, a grief they handle very differently, and the quiet presence of a mother who is gone. Makio writes. Asa writes. Bit by bit the old grudges start to look different. Can a woman who always kept everyone at arm's length learn to be family to a teenager she barely knows?
