Three years have passed since the last big cardfight, and the game has moved on without waiting for anyone. Chrono Shindo is a middle schooler who has settled into a routine of boredom and solitude, keeping to himself, expecting nothing from his days. Then he opens his school locker and finds a Vanguard deck and a single card that was not there before. No note, no explanation. Just an address written on the card. He goes there. Why not, right? That one decision drags him into a world of cardfights he never asked for, and into the paths of Shion Kiba and Tokoha Anjo, two players with their own reasons for holding a deck. Chrono picks up Gear Chronicle, a clan nobody has seen before, and the three of them get pulled toward something the game has never allowed: an impossible future, an impossible version of yourself, a Generation. Friends, rivals, and a fourth level of cards that changes how every match is played. But the real question is the card in the locker. Who put it there, and why did they pick Chrono out of everyone?
