Three rejections in one day. That is what it takes to push Chika Suzugamori, an eighteen year old manga artist who barely leaves her room, to do something completely out of character. Her editor tells her to draw from life, but her life is ink and deadlines. So she posts a poll online, just to see what happens, and lets strangers pick a direction. Next thing she knows she is on a train heading north out of Tokyo with no plan at all. The top of Mount Haguro hits her harder than any deadline ever could. Wind, stone steps, the smell of cedar. For the first time in ages her head is quiet, and she wants to draw again. Not the safe, polished stuff she has been submitting either. Street cats. Old temples. The faces of people she just met. So she keeps going, letting her followers send her to tiny mountain villages and forgettable seaside towns, chasing whatever catches her eye. Every stop chips away at the way she sees her own work. But the rejections are not finished with her, and neither is her doubt. Can someone who never learned to look up from the page really build a career out of wandering?
