Koyomi Araragi has his nose in the books, grinding for college entrance exams like any other kid. Then he walks past a mirror and stops cold. Nothing. No face, no shirt, no him. Just a vampire's trick, the kind of thing that should not be happening to a guy who still eats dinner with his sisters. So he does the sensible thing and calls a human-like doll named Yotsugi Ononoki, who brings along her master, Yozuru Kagenui, a specialist in immortals who has probably seen worse. She sizes him up fast and lays it out without much sympathy. The vampiric power he got from Shinobu Oshino is eating away at what is left of his humanity, one little slip at a time. Use it again and he loses himself for good. Stop using it and he stays human, but weak, with every monster in town still hungry. That is the whole choice, and it is not much of one. Koyomi has friends who would bleed for him and a vampire bound to his shadow who might not take this lying down. But the clock is ticking and his own reflection already left the room. What happens when the next thing that goes is the part of him that still cares?
