A year ago the Optimums took over Sacco City and renamed everyone who came from the far east. Now they are just East Refugees, and the new laws make that word mean something. He Jiang rides in a truck with her father, hauling goods through the streets, quick to snap at anyone who looks at them wrong. Then a sword in the cab brings the Klee down on them. A scuffle. A gunshot. Her father bleeds out on the pavement and she gets eight years behind bars for it. She walks out at twenty four, finds the truck rotting where they left it, and with a few new friends gets the old thing running again. Deliveries. Checkpoints. The Department of Security breathing down her neck every time she crosses a district line. They push, she pushes back harder, and it keeps escalating. One angry girl with a repaired truck against a regime that owns the whole city. How many people will she have to convince to stand with her before the pushing turns into something else?
