Himiko Himejima is just a normal girl until a wall of fire swallows her and her friend Masahiko and spits them out in Yamatai, an ancient land that runs on sacred flame. Three years back, during the rite to pick a new queen, ships from across the sea brought Kunami invaders. Their general wanted the power of Bokka for himself. He grabbed the wrong thing. The holy fountain curdled into a well of darkness, and now the dead climb out of it and march on the cities of light. Himiko is not just a stray kid in the wrong century. The flame chose her, and the six candidates for the throne, each one leading a scrap of a resistance, need what she carries. Betrayal runs through their camp like rot. Masahiko just wants to go home. Himiko has to decide how much of herself she is willing to burn to get them both back. Can a girl who never asked for any of this hold a kingdom together before the undead reach the fire?
