A Japanese journalist named Makoto Shinjou flies into the middle of nowhere, a dusty airbase called Area 88, to write about men who fight for money. One of them catches his eye: Shin Kazama, a Japanese ace with steady hands and dead eyes. Shin never chose this. His best friend forged his name on a mercenary contract, and just like that, his airline career and his wedding to Ryoko were gone. Now he straps into a fighter jet every day and shoots down strangers for a country that isn't his. Three ways out. Fly for three years. Earn one and a half million dollars. Or run, and get shot before he reaches the desert's edge. Makoto keeps asking questions, and the answers get uglier the closer he looks. So who is really trapped out here in the sand: the pilot who can't leave, or the journalist who came to watch?
