The Northerners were losing the civil war, so they tried forbidden magic. Soldiers came back from it with claws, fangs, wings, and enough power to turn the tide. They called them Incarnates. The South never stood a chance. Then the fighting stopped, and the magic kept working. The beasts inside those men did not care that peace had been signed. They started eating away at whatever was still human, slowly, from the inside. The same crowds that once cheered now locked their doors. Then they started hunting. Nancy's father was one of those soldiers. Not killed in battle. A Beast Hunter shot him down like an animal. She tracks the man for months, finds him, empties her rifle into his chest at close range. He stays standing. He is one of them too. Hank Henriette used to command the Incarnates, and now he puts bullets in the ones who can no longer hold on. He says it is an oath, not cruelty. So he lets her follow him. What is she hoping to find at the end of that road: the monster she wants dead, or the reason her father asked to die?
