She is a princess of Heaven. He is a monkey demon with a staff and a temper. Su Yi slips down into the mortal world, meets Sun Wukong there, and what starts as curiosity turns into something neither of them planned. The other gods don't see a person. They see a monster that wandered out of the wrong story, and they beat him down for it. Then they bury him under a mountain. Three hundred years pass in the dark. Buddha doesn't free him. He just keeps talking, teaching Wukong to hold on to justice when everything inside him wants to break. When the mountain finally opens, Wukong takes a job: guard the Tang Monk on a road to the far edge of the world and bring back the Fire of Creation for the sake of ordinary people. They walk, they fight, they survive things that should have killed them. Then they come home. And waiting there is a conspiracy nobody saw coming, one that reaches for the monk, for Wukong, for all of them. So who set the road in front of them in the first place, and was Wukong ever meant to come back down from that mountain at all?
